Marrakech is a wonderful city in Northern Africa to visit with teenagers. Known as the “Red City,” Marrakech has a unique culture of vivid colors, gorgeous mosques, red clay walls, alleys, and spices galore!

I visited Marrakech with my family over a long holiday weekend. It was a short 3 1/2 hour flight from London. Making this the perfect trip for us to take to get some sun, fun, and delicious food.

Marrakech, Morocco is very different from London and other European countries we’ve visited. We decided to travel to Morocco because we wanted to experience a country in Africa, and Marrakech was the closest city to us. It was our introduction to going to Africa for the first time. It’s like dipping our toes in the water to see if we’ll like it, then jumping in the pool.

Some people may be wondering if is Marrakech good for families?

I think it is a diverse city suitable for teenagers and young adults. It’s a walkable city to get out and explore with the family. Everyone has to watch out for the scooters zooming by. Ultimately, my teenager and family enjoyed the people, and the activities we did in Marrakech in 3 days.

Here are the Best things to do in Marrakech with teenagers.

One of the best things to do in Marrakech with teenagers is riding camels. Taking a camel ride through the desert is a fun thing to do with your teen for a unique experience. The entire family will enjoy getting majestic views of the desert and palm trees under the sun.

There are several different companies offering camel riding tours. This camel tour we took is perfect for teens. It’s a 1-hour ride through the La Palmeraie Oasis. The Palmeraie Oasis is outside Marrakech, so you won’t have to go far.

Secondly, there’s another popular camel ride tour in the Agafay Desert.  Here, your teen will get amazing views of the red desert and its stunning terrain. It’ll be fun when the guides put you in their traditional Berber dress and scarf before hopping on the camels.

Shopping in the Souks - Ms. Southernverse

Shopping in the colorful Souks is a must thing to do in Marrakech with teenagers. There are unique finds from vibrant spices, beautiful Kaftans, and jasmine pants inspired by African and Middle Eastern culture.

Shop for gorgeous scarves, beautiful handmade purses, jewelry, pretty pottery and shoes. Another great thing to buy as a souvenir is spices. As you pass by shops, you’ll see vibrant colors of spices piled high. From reds, and oranges, to yellow colors, you’ll see it everywhere. We bought some spices and love using the Tajine (32 spice) blend.

Plus, there are great Instagram photo spots for teens to capture while in the Souks. Take one while admiring the intricate details and designs of the handmade brass Moroccan lamps.

While shopping in the souks, don’t forget to haggle on prices. If they say it costs one thing, more than likely, it’s marked up. So offer a much lower price than what they’re requesting.

3. Visit Jardin Majorelle Gardens

Take a break from all that shopping and get some peace and tranquility in the gardens away from the busy streets of Marrakech. The Jardin Majorelle garden is a popular attraction because of its beautiful gardens featuring dazzling colors.

Stroll around in the shady garden and admire beautiful trees, plants, and cacti from all over the world. Also, the color blue, aka Majorelle blue, is very prevalent in Marrakech. This hue is seen all around the city, especially in the Jardin Majorelle garden.

You may want to get to the gardens early because they can get swamped by midday.

If you know, like I do, that teenagers love to eat. So, what better way to have fun and experience a different culture than through food?

The Moroccan natives are about their intense spices when preparing their food.

From eating Briouates and Moroccan Sweets to Babbouch (snail soup), you’ll fall in love with Morocco’s food culture.

However, one of the most popular dishes to try is the Tajine. They traditionally cook it in a ceramic pot and dome covered with meat, spices, and vegetables, slowly cooked for hours over hot charcoal or a wood-burning oven.

You can get a 4×4 and let your teen ride on the passenger’s side or sit behind you on a quad bike, but make sure they’re good at holding on to you.

Bahai Palace Morocco; Things to do in Marrakech with teenagers

Known as “Brilliance” in Arabic, the Bahia Palace is an iconic landmark in Marrakech built in the 19th Century. The Bahia Palace is captivating, and your teenager will be in awe seeing the stunning architecture and beautiful bright colors etched into stone and wood. You’ll see gorgeous mosaic floors and exquisite art on the ceilings and walls.

I’d recommend visiting with a guide to learn the history of the different rooms in the palace.

Without a guide, you will be lost and may not understand what you’re looking at since there aren’t any English placards detailing what it is.

Take a stroll to admire the stunning Koutoubia Mosque while walking around the square.

Although you cannot enter the mosque if you are a non-muslim, it’s still mesmerizing to see the details of the architecture from the square below.

After spending a few days in Marrakech, Morocco, you may want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Therefore, one of the best things to do in Marrakech with teens is to take a day trip.

They are several tours offered by companies, but this day trip will take you out of the city and into the Atlas Mountains. Get a glimpse of the Berber people, their lives, and their culture.

I know TLC says Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls”, but in Marrakech, we will.

Chasing waterfalls is another adventurous thing to do in Marrakech with teenagers.

Your teen will enjoy walking through the trees and trails to the waterfalls.

Not to mention, there are a couple of waterfalls on the outskirts of Marrakech. The first must-see is Ouzoud Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in North Africa. It has three glorious waterfall tiers gushing from it. While there, you can take a dip in the refreshing waters.

Then there’s another waterfall in Imlil village through the Atlas Mountains. It’s a smaller waterfall in a cove in Imlil village, yet the path to get there is breathtaking.

I recommend taking a guided tour to find the waterfalls. On these tours, the company will pick you up from your accommodation and take you on a journey to the enchanting waterfalls.

11. Things to do in Marrakech with teenagers – Stay in a Riad

Riad in Morocco

When in Marrakech with teens, stay in a Riad instead of a traditional hotel. A riad is a Moroccan home turned into an intimate hotel. From the outside, it may look like a regular boring building, but once inside, you’ll see an open-top courtyard surrounded by gardens.

Furthermore, some popular riads have a pool centered in the courtyard with the gardens and vibrant colors of carved art surrounding it. Plus, they have beautiful mosaic art and symbols created on the walls.

Staying in a Riad is unique because it feels as if you’re in someone’s home. It’s smaller than classic hotel giants. It’s more personable and cozy, and the staff is more hospitable. It’s like being at grandma’s house with lots of love and good food.

Riad Lyla, where we stayed, was incredible. The food was exceptionally delicious. I like how they laid out breakfast for us every morning poolside. Plus, the Chicken Tagine we had for dinner will make you wanna slap your mama because it’s that good!

12. Lounge by the Pool

Riad Pool; Things to do in Marrakech with teenagers

Lounging by the pool will be a perfect activity for your teenager to swim or relax.

Besides, In Marrakech, no matter what time of the year you visit, the weather will be hot enough to take a dip.

This will be right on time, especially if you’re coming from a colder climate as we did from England.

Feel the sun on your face while gazing upon the gardens and the intricate, brightly colored tiles.

Good Vibes Only!

Trust me, your teen would love spending this time chilling by the pool while in Marrakech.

13. Visit the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square at Night

Jemaa el-Fnaa Morocco

There are many things to do in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square with teenagers. This outdoor market is bursting with people, shops, and entertainment. It’s a must-see during your stay in Marrakech.

While here, listen to live music and embrace the culture of Marrakech.

Have fun watching the street acts of storytellers, snake charmers, and monkey handlers. Go shopping for goodies in the market. Stop at some stalls and try some snacks. See if your teen is brave enough to try some snail soup, a popular dish in Marrakech.

But as a warning, it can be a bit chaotic as there are loads of people everywhere. It’s loud and crowded.

So be careful while walking around the square, and say no thank you to people who try to sell you something unless you want it.

Also, I will caveat that you should also visit the square during the day. It’s a different experience during the day and night. During the day, it is much calmer, and there are fewer people. You’ll get to try some freshly squeezed Orange Juice, cheap bread, and breakfast foods.

14. Sit on a Terrace

Sit on a terrace to enjoy fascinating views of the city. Watch the sunset in Jemaa el-Fnaa Square from a rooftop terrace. Then kick back, and just people watch. You’ll be amazed at the things you’ll see from above.

Also, you and your teen should visit the M Rooftop Restaurant to get a gorgeous view of the Koutoubia Mosque and the city while eating incredible food from their terrace.

Plus, the setting at M Rooftop was perfect.

15. Things to do in Marrakech with teenagers – Drink Mint Tea

One of the things to do in Marrakech with teens is drinking Morocco’s signature drink—Mint Tea. Mint Tea is Gunpowder (Green tea) infused with fresh spearmint leaves and combined with loads of sugar.

Honestly, it won’t be that hard to get a warm cup of Mint Tea in Marrakech because everyone serves it. Our Riad hosts greeted us with a pot of mint tea and cookies upon arrival. Talk about a fabulous check-in!

Also, a unique thing teens will enjoy is seeing how they pour the tea from mid-air into the cups, creating a foam layer on top. They say it’s the only way to do it! In Marrakech, you get tea and a show

Hello – would you mind sharing what time of year you were in Marrakech? I am planning a trip with my 2 teen girls the first week in April. I have been trying to figure out if we can expect some pool time in the afternoons. The average temperature does not look very warm. You mentioned in your blog that it is warm enough to go swimming year round?
Thanks for the info. Your trip looks wonderful and has me excited for ours!

    1. Hi Katrina. Thanks for visiting my page. We visited Marrakech in Oct and it was scorching hot. However, temperatures will be milder around April, but I think you can still get some pool time in. Especially if you stay or visit a Riad which has indoor courtyard pools. It’s still a lot warmer there than in comparison to England. LOL. I know you and your girls will have fun! The camel rides and dune buggies was my daughter’s favorite besides eating all the delicious food. Let me know how it goes.
